We do not need to know many things in order to know our Father in heaven, to believe in Jesus—the expression of His love—and to be saved. But we must know the clear truth. And for that truth, we must be prepared to lay down our lives.
Those who became the light and salt of the world were not people who knew many things. They were people who staked their lives on one clear truth. Do you want to live a life of true worth? Do you want to finish the race of life with joy by doing what truly matters? You do not need to be highly intelligent or especially attractive. Nor do you need to be born into a good family or attend a prestigious school.
You simply need to know the eternal and unchanging truth and be prepared to give your life for it. The value of your life is not determined by you, but is judged by our Father in heaven. You must be gripped and led by the Holy Spirit. Hundreds of millions of people call themselves Christians, yet most of them are not living with their lives staked on the truth that gives life its true and eternal value.
People spend their days pursuing a better house, enjoyable travel, their children’s education, greater wealth, and better health. In the midst of this world, they forget the kind of life that has eternal value and affects their everlasting destiny. This is truly tragic.
In India, a young Korean missionary passed away because of COVID-19. He lived in the same apartment complex as I did, and his young son often came to our home to play with my children. This missionary, who had a young wife and a little son, devoted himself to sharing the gospel in India. He contracted COVID-19 there, could not receive treatment in time, and passed away.
Does this sound like a tragedy to you? When people who proclaim the name of Jesus, who risk their lives to share the good news, lose their lives while doing things that the world may call foolish, is that truly tragic? The real tragedy is the life of those who pursue the pleasures of this world—like members of the FIRE movement who dream of retiring early and simply enjoying the rest of their lives. Most people work hard each day for that kind of life, and some succeed, enjoy it for a while, and then eventually face death.
The lives of so many people who live this way—this is the true tragedy. We must live for what is eternal. One day, after our life on this earth—the life we must eventually leave behind—comes to an end, we will stand before our Father in heaven. To stand before Him and say that we lived an enjoyable life, lived in a good house, graduated from a good school, and donated a great deal of money from time to time—this is the true tragedy.
Nothing can have true value without Jesus. How much have you thought about Jesus in your life, even just today? From this very moment, I pray that in every moment of your life you will remember Jesus, who is watching over you, and live a life of true and eternal worth.
